Stream: Citizen - Deep End EP

Anyone with an ear to the ground (or the club doors) can identify the gradual revival of house music.  Not that it ever left completely as it has enjoyed a retro appeal for a while now and its influences have been lingering in other genres through the use some of its characteristic sounds.  Nonetheless, the (wider) genre has been rearing its head in a purer form for a while now and Citizen's Deep End EP, which you can listen to below in its entirety, is one of our favorite examples of this.  Coming off as a Chicago House record that's also lived and matured though bass music, post-dubstep and the various techno/minimal trends that have emerged in the decades since the genre's peak.  The Londoner Citizen is definitely on to something here and we look forward to the official release on MadTech Records in mid-June.

Ra.h / Donato Dozzy / Hieroglyphic Being - Redose-1

Morphine Records issue their first remix 12" with a dual bill. On the A-side, master Italian minimalist Donato Dozzy treats '"Spacepops" to a duby hypnotic techno rework sounding slightly like The Field with the less glitch and more of a focus on electronic rather than organic sounds. On the flipside, Hieroglyphic Being aka Jamal Moss delivers a futuristic tribal techno take on 'Freak Inspector' by Madteo and Sensational. Listen to both below:

Delta Funktionen - "Traces" LP

After his fourth year of releasing EPs on the Delsin imprint and Ann Aimee, Delta Funktionen will finally be releasing his debut full length LP "Traces" in early June on Delsin. You can preview the record below, which while still very much grounded in techno features easily distinguishable electro, house and even Italo-disco influences. Intrigued yet?

Watch: Lorn - "Ghosst(s)" Music Video

Lorn is not exactly prolific yet everything he releases is marked by ingenuity and quality. The latest track to surface from his upcoming sophomore LP on Ninja Tune "Ask The Dust" is "Ghosst(s)" which also happens to have a creepy video directed by CRCR.  The press release describes the track and video as follows:

"Ghosst(s) is the demonstration of the passage from life to death, from a presence to an absence. Various stages are linked together and constituted the transformation of an alive body into an abstract entity."

We totally see and hear that all that and more below. For a free a mp3 of the track and more details on the album releasing on the 19th of June head here

Video: Shlohmo – “The Way U Do”

Shlohmo teamed up with director Andrey Nikolaev for the visuals on “The Way U Do”. The tune has a sinister appeal with its eerie vocal samples and creeping beat. The video fits perfectly with the song showcasing some very “fashiony” shots of dancers in freakish costumes, enjoy below…

Listen: SBTRKT – “Gamelena”

SBTRKT is back with his first completely new material since last year’s breakout LP. The producer is said to be in the studio working on a new ep and has offered “Gamelena” as a taste of what we might expect to hear in the future.

Major Lazer - "Get Free" (Andy C Remix)

Some of you might remember Andy C from the drum and bass heydays of Ram Trilogy and most of you have definitely heard of Major Lazer who recently released a collaboration track with The Dirty Projectors' Amber Coffman entitled "Get Free" (watch the video for the original here).  Now you can hear the ridiculously energetic and rewind worthy d&b remix of "Get Free" by Andy C with a predictably awesome bassline.  Listen below:

Anstam - "Observing The Patterns"

We often don't know what to make of Anstam's work but his music is usually a slow burn and takes a while to grow on us....which is why we were shocked by the immediate impact of this short atmospheric track of to be featured on Modeselektor's Modeselektion 2.  "Observing the Patterns" is an ambient track with a catchy melodic arpeggio...patterns and atmosphere by the kilo, while Anstam's characteristic grasp of all that is ominous creeps in and out the melody ingeniously.  Listen to the track below:

Fatima Al Qadiri - "How Can I Resist U" (Girl Unit Remix)

Fatima Al Qadiri (aka Ayshay of Tri Angle fame) whose life journey spans three continents (thus far) is releasing a remix EP of tracks of her latest full length Genre-Specific Xperience on UNO.  One of the artists reworking her music is none other than Girl Unit who delivers a treble heavy, rave stab epic remix of "How Can I Resist You". Listen to the track below:

Watch: Modeselektor with Thom Yorke - "This"

"This" is the second video of a Modeselektor x Thom Yorke collab, the previous one being "Shipwreck". You may remember both tracks from Modeselektor's 2011 Monkeytown LP. The video features almost features an abundance of styles such as puppeteering, stop/start photography, 3D modelling and traditional animation.   Watch the video below:

Bo Saris - "She's on Fire" (Maya Jane Coles Remix)

Our appreciation for Maya Jane Coles' work began with her impossibly perfect remix of Alpines' "Cocoon" under her Nocturnal Sunshine monicker and grew even more with her recent DJ-Kicks mix that is probably our favorite this year. Listening to her music one cannot help but compare what she has done for house music to what many contemporary bass/post-dubstep producers have done for dubstep and grime.  She's definitely got a 4/4 house groove going on but she's not being limited by any of the genre's tropes or cliches.  As is evidenced by her remix of Bo Saris' "She's on Fire" (a title that aptly describes the remixer herself)  this is both funky and deep music that should not be overlooked.  Watch the video and listen to the track below:

Gold Panda - "Mountain/Financial District" EP

Despite his many soundcloud posts that were comprised mostly of snippets and experiments and his DJ Kicks mix, Gold Panda hasn't released anything officially since his critically acclaimed 2010 debut LP Lucky Shiner.  All that's about to change with the release of his new EP on Ghostly International.  The two track affair, which features the above digi-pshychedelic artwork of label regular Andy Gilmore,  released yesterday digitally and will get a separate 7" vinyl release on the 11th of June.  We should also mention that in the UK the EP will be released on Gold Panda's own label NOTOWN.

Gold Panda currently describes his music as modern hip-hop and we tend to agree. "Financial District" features a mangled brass sample decorated by Gold Panda's take on the staple sonic arsenal of that genre such as claps, thuds and high hats. On the slightly more abstract "Mountain" Gold Panda's use of the 808 snare is a direct nod to Noah "40" Shebib and some-time Drake collaborators Boi-1da.  Listen to both below:

TNGHT (aka Hudson Mohawke and Lunice) - Bugg'n

TNGHT is the much anticipated collaborative project that sees producers Hudson Mohawke and Lunice joining forces to forge a predictably massive sound.  Many low quality clips have been circulating on the internet, yet Warp, in light of the duo's EP releasing on the label on the 24th of July in association with Lucky Me Records, has finally released an official stream of a track to be featured on the 5 song record entitled "Bugg'n".  The track is as stripped back as it is huge with both producers showing a characteristic mastering of all the elements in the low and high frequencies, not to mention a swervy shuffle that is bound to break ya neck.  Listen to the track below:

Watch: XXYYXX - "About You" Music Video

Watch the latest video by the young XXYYXX for his woozy post-dilla track "About You". Solid track with quite the trippy music video featuring animal masks and smoke by the ton...need we say more? Why is this guy not on Brainfeeder yet?

Blackest Ever Black 7" Split: Pete Swanson - "Positive" and Moin "Elsie"

Blackest Ever Black announced the launch of a new 7" inch series entitled Confessions.  The first installment is a split release featuring Pete Swanson's "Positive" and Moin's "Elsie" limited to 300 copies and available for pre-order here.  You can preview both tracks in the single soundcloud stream below. We're particularly excited for "Elsie" which brings the industrial noise yet exudes harmonics and melody from the distortions.

PS - interesting fact for those non-greek readers: the small fish logo on the bottom right was an early Christian slogan with Greek letters. The word under the drawing of the fish "ΙΧΘΥΣ" literally means fish, yet it was an acronym code that persecuted Christians used to recognize each other and stands for "Ιησους Χριστός, Θεου Υιός, Cωτήρ" meaning Jesus Christ, Son of God, the Saviour - yet another culty reference by Blackest Every Black :)

Last Step (aka Venetian Snares) - Xyrem

Canadian Venetian Snares known for his insane drill and bass records, not to mention his disturbing cover art choices, has recorded yet another LP on Planet μ, under his Last Step alias (we were huge fans of the self-titled debut under that monicker).  Last Step focuses on an acid and techno sound palette and is generally a more accessible and melodic affair.  The latest Last Step LP entitled "Sleep" focuses on the state between sleep and awaking (a semi-lucid state that apparently inspired Aphex Twin in his work as well).

According the the man himself: “Sleep are tunes I recorded while falling asleep. These tracks are really different for me, really mellow and dreamy, that nice comfortable feeling when you’re falling asleep. Feels pointless to describe it, that feeling, there really shouldn’t be words for that state, so I describe the process a little instead. For awhile, when I was really tired and ready to go to bed instead of going to sleep I would make a tune. Get some stuff going on my sequencers, drum machines, patch up my modular and just jam it. Would fall asleep alot listening to the sequences, few seconds of sleep or a few minutes, wake up in it. This is what I sound like in my sleep.”  You can listen to LP track "Xyrem " (sounds like a sleeping pill?) below:

Pariah - "Rift"

Pariah just uploaded this tasty bass number with dark industrial influences on his soundcloud page. "Rift" will feature on his forthcoming EP on R&S Records.

Björk - "Virus" (Hudson Mohawke Peaches and Guacamol Rework)

Glaswegian maximalist producer Hudson Mohawke delivers an uncharacteristically restrained remix of Icelandic pop diva Björk's "Virus".  HudMo let's her voice take center stage all the while blasting a reverb drenched beat and a brassy synth hyphenating all the right bits.  The whole affair reminds us of a recent remix of Florence and the Machine's "Never Let Me Go" by Clams Casino...and we mean that in a very very good way. Head over here to listen to the track.

Four Tet - "Jupiters"

While Kieren Hebden has been keeping busy with his new Text imprint and Burial collaborations we haven't heard any Four Tet solo material since "Moma".  Below you can listen to his latest track "Jupiter" to be released soon on his own aforementioned label.  The sound is a slightly more electronic take on his signature organic techno shuffle he executed so brilliantly on his last LP.

Download: Night Works - "I Tried So Hard" (Gold Panda Remix)

Gold Panda's latest remix of Night Work's "I Tried So Hard" see yet another tonal shift in his composition approach.  The crackle and post-dilla glitch is still present, yet he abandons the organic bell/tin sounds he's been sporting on his recent experiments in favor of a more electronic synth driven sound palette.
